Nowadays we can clearly see that informational abundance that collapsed on us is really getting negative tendencies.
The reasons for this are two important singularities of our mind.
First one is our willingness to agree with majority opinion.
And the second one is predominance of negative expectations over positive ones. And we see how increasing communicational ties combined with our anxiety is leading us towards a social collapse – negativity in information space creates more negativity that enters our real lives…
What can we do to stay sane in this new world?
To be positive, to protect our minds from strange and covert involvement.
First of all – to realize that virtual world, despite its simplicity and accessibility, is much more poor than real world.
Second – to understand the rules of virtual world’s life and how it influences our consciousness, and to comprehend that our actions influence it as much, as it influences us.
Third – to learn how to analyze information and messages, to know how to form and develop your own perception of the real world, to nurture your own mindset.
In summer of 2014 the research project Reputation Lab started a series of experiments focused on examination of the way virtual world influences our real life. First series of experiments was dedicated to the topic of news exchange. The goal of the experiment is to define which type of news we more actively pass to other people.
Experiment was conducted in groups of six people, active internet users, of different age, line of work and income.
The participants were sitting by the table, the centre of which signified “collective information space”. Participants were receiving cards with news in several stages, and they had to decide, which of the news they want to tell to other people. To do so all the selected news were moved to the centre of the table. All the cards were numbered and color coordinated from the other side. Red color signified negative news, green – positive ones. The participants COULDN’T see those markings, but it was recorded by the camera, located under the table’s transparent centre.
During the experiment every participant received a total of 24 news (equal number of positive and negative ones) and was obliged to share a half of them: those news that in his opinion were important for other people.
What was the result?
60% to 70% of the news, that ended up in the centre of the table were negative. So out of all the received information the participants were more willing to share negative news…
These results were anticipated.
At least for the Russian-speaking segment of the virtual world. And they were also confirmed while analyzing the practice of the use of Russian language in official and spoken language. According to the website “The frame of Russian language” negative particle “NOT” and pronoun “ME” are amongst the most user Russian words. Negative particle is the third most used one and the pronoun is the second one… So the Russian-speaking space is the world of egocentric negativists.
Of course we want to be positive. And every one of us had a good part, but… Virtual reality – collective “wish machine” – often overpowers us.
Why is this happening?
Because yesterday, one day, one month and one year ago we willingly put our request for negativity and fear into the “wish machine”. And the machine made our wish come true – returned this request and multiplied it… As the result: bad mood of millions becomes our personal mood, and our personal mood increases the mood of millions. So we start to look at the world with different eyes. Nowadays, when we spend the fifth part of our lives in virtual reality (world of illusions), it’s even easier to make us believe something. Our mind is even more opened to manipulations. We became a hundred times more vulnerable…
How to protect yourself from alien influence and to get use instead of harm from virtual world? How to manage the “wish machine”, and not to be its slave?
While researching the virtual reality, we phrased the “Theory of Positive Wishes”. The essence of this theory is that your every positive news, every positive request and every kind wish makes better not only your life, but also the lives of billions of other people, you are so tightly connected to nowadays. We are able to change the program of the machine, that we created ourselves. We are able to create a positive space around us, even if other people are really trying to manipulate our mind…
It’s important to remember that virtual world is s machine. And as every other machine it’s neutral. We, people, are making it either good or bad. And we can change this program.
We defined three easy rules of working with this machine.
First – to remember that virtual world is ALWAYS an illusion. That’s why you need to be even more aware of your actions while you’re inside it.
Second – to share your positivity even more. To tell others at least three positive news per day, and to try and avoid negative ones.
Third – to try and think and write only positive stuff. To use negativity less, meaning words “no” and “not”». To look at every situation as an opportunity, not a problem…
This is how you can first change your thinking, and then the world around us.
